Reading Tip #8: Let your child pick out books they are interested in.
(Yes, this may mean that you have to read the same Octonauts or Scaredy Squirrel book several times a day over the course of a week to your child. But you are teaching them to look forward to reading, because you are choosing to read what they like.)

#1) Make a prediction (or a guess) based on the cover of the book.
#2) Take a picture walk to preview what the book will be about. #3) Ask questions while you read. #4) Make reading the book interesting! Use voices, dialect, accents, etc. Reading Tip #7:
Explain new vocabulary using pictures or synonyms *while* you read the book. Reading Tip #6: When you plan a visit to your local library with your pre-readers, check out concept books or reserve them beforehand.
(Concept books include: ABC's, numbers, shapes, opposites & colors.) |
