Literacy

Welcome to my podcast! I started this show in an effort to educate the public about the importance of literacy, especially when we have kids to look out for! I reference my time as an elementary schoolteacher & tutor + my current experience as a children's author & mama of 3 littles to address the biggest literacy issues facing us today.

Magic Portal Books is a publishing company started by Riyon to share these cute fictional science stories (but they're also non-fiction & include pages of facts at the end of the book.)
All you need is a tablet or a phone to scan a QR code & you're instantly transported through a portal to another place. So far the books have taken place in Arizona, but I am joining her team & will be writing a few books based in Utah!
Here's the Youtube video from our chat, which includes a way to see these interactive books at play!

Podcast #15: Reading Simplified with Marnie Ginsberg

5/23/2023

READING TIPS:
1. Kids need to learn to decode words first when learning to read. ("crack the code")
2.Let kids pick what they're interested in when it comes to reading.
3. Read widely! Gain volume once kids have learned to decode.
4. Read with your child, & if they're resistant, say things like: "Oh, my voice is tired-- can you read these words to me?"
5. Make different genre or book suggestions to your kids.

Podcast #9:Grief Awareness with Children's Author Jayne Pillemer

1/24/2023

I loved getting to focus on loss & grief awareness through children’s picture books with Jayne Pillemer last week; here are some of the show notes from our discussion.

First of all, Jayne said when teaching children how to grieve or cope with loss of a loved one, adults should honor their intelligence.
Kids are more resilient than we give them credit for.

Here is a link to Jayne’s sweet picture book; she will inscribe a nameplate to dedicate a copy for you if you reach out!
