For the Love of Literacy <3

Literacy

Welcome to my podcast! I started this show in an effort to educate the public about the importance of literacy, especially when we have kids to look out for! I reference my time as an elementary schoolteacher & tutor + my current experience as a children's author & mama of 2 littles to address the biggest literacy issues facing us today.

Quotes & Takeaways from the Show:
  • “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” -Margaret Fuller
  • “The Three B’s which encompass an inexpensive reading kit that most parents can afford.”
  1. The first B is books. Ownership of a book is treasured, especially when our children can write their name on a sticker or in the book and it doesn’t have to be returned to the library.
  2. A Book Basket. If you have been following me on Instagram, you already know that I fully promote book baskets around the house and in the car. I try to implement books over screen time *always* and having books be available to the kids is crucial to that plan. Even the bathroom is a great place for books, especially during potty training season. Jim Trelease said, “There is probably more reading down in the bathrooms of America than in all the libraries & classrooms combined. Put a book basket in there, stocked with books, magazines, etc.”
  3. Bed Lamp.   If you wish to raise a reader, the first order of business is to get a reading light for your child. (I have a lamp in each child’s bedroom, although it currently serves as the light my husband & I read to them by.) With an older child you could say, ‘We think you’re old enough to stay up later at night & read in bed just like Mom & Dad now.’ - Jim Trelease
  • There have been some recent studies done about the effectiveness of the AR program and here is what I've gathered; “an effective reading program helps students interpret, comprehend & engage in textual information, resulting in consistent academic progression.” (Kelly & Clausen-Grace, 2006.)
