For the Love of Literacy <3

Literacy

Welcome to my podcast! I started this show in an effort to educate the public about the importance of literacy, especially when we have kids to look out for! I reference my time as an elementary schoolteacher & tutor + my current experience as a children's author & mama of 2 littles to address the biggest literacy issues facing us today.

Podcast Episode 3: Wordless Picture Books
Show Notes
  • What qualifies as a wordless picture book? Why are they important to include in our home library collection?
  •  The skills our children can obtain from reading wordless picture books:
    • Vocabulary skills
    • Sequencing & storytelling ability
    • Summarizing
    • Book handling skills
  •  “When you’re choosing books for very young children, keep an eye out for predictable patterns, simple & pleasant text, & illustrations that cause your child to look a little longer than necessary.” -Sarah Mackenzie (emphasis added)
  • See my blog this week for a bigger list of wordless picture books we enjoy! {“Top Book Lists”}
  • 6 TIPS for Reading Wordless Picture Books:
  • 1)      Begin by looking at the cover.
  • 2)      Read the title; this may lend itself to predictive power in the future.
  • 3)      Take a “picture walk.” (I used to encourage my students to do this with easy chapters, graphic novels, etc. when I was teaching 4th grade. Just flip through the pictures, taking notice of colors or recurring images that might help tell the story later.)
  • 4)      Read the story; use dramatic voices or add sound effects.
  • 5)      Encourage your child to take a turn telling the story.
  • 6)      Ask questions about the book. Some good examples of these questions are:     a. Who is your favorite character?   b.      Which is your favorite drawing or illustration?
