For the Love of Literacy <3

Literacy

Welcome to my podcast! I started this show in an effort to educate the public about the importance of literacy, especially when we have kids to look out for! I reference my time as an elementary schoolteacher & tutor + my current experience as a children's author & mama of 2 littles to address the biggest literacy issues facing us today.

TIPS FOR READING WITH KIDS:
  1. When they get stuck on a word, have them look at the vowel first, & then identify the root or base word.
  2. Find something they can read & are interested in.
  3. Give phonics pronunciation tips like: make your lips horizontal & tight & then form the “beee” sound.
  4. Have kids listen to audio books or text while they're following along visually (in a book.)
  5. Play with words & sounds (what sound does "s" make? What words start with "s?")

If you'd like to check out what a subscription with KiwiCo can bring, check the Youtube link above. I have a code for 50% off your first month of a 6 or 12-month subscription!
My kids have gotten the Koala Crate (for 2-4 years old) & Kiwi Crate for my older engineer-minded son (for ages 5-8.) I kind of want to try out the Doodle or Tinker crate, myself.
What's great about KiwiCo is that they have different, individualized crates for each age group & all their crates are STEM themed; there is both scientific and reading material included in each crate & it is delivered monthly.  (You have the option of adding a book along with the reading material pamphlet that is provided in the crate.) This code ends on October 4th.
These crates make great birthday or Christmas gifts & they also are a thoughtful annual gift; the gift that keeps on giving! #ad  #sponsored
Also, just a sidenote, but I love the DIY projects posted on the website & most of those projects you most likely have the materials for right at home! We have done the melted crayon artwork & glow-in-the-dark star jars; I'd love to hear what you try out with your littles!

  • Influencer Instagram Accounts & Blogs to Follow:
    • @hopscotchhomeschool (My friend Michelle is the one with the great suggestions for incorporating audiobooks at quiet time.)
    • @everydayreading (Janssen has done some helpful research about the benefits of audiobooks & all of her girls enjoy listening to them as well; Janssen often shares great audiobook deals on her Instagram stories.)

The most important benefits with audiobooks are:
1) Sharpening listening skills
2) Connecting text-to-text or making connections with characters in the stories
3) Hearing grammatically correct language
4) Scaffolds higher level vocabulary
5) Teaching expression, inflection, & dialogue (since most audiobooks are read by professional actors or narrators)
6) Provides ideas for conversation topics
7) Reinforces comprehension (especially for kids who struggle to see read or understand the printed word)
8) Improving the reading rate of children (as their ability to recognize, comprehend & pronounce words improves, children can read faster.)
9) Foster confidence in young readers & academic success
10) Removes printed word/ text decoding anxiety

Have you heard of a pen designed to read a book aloud to your child & to develop innovation & critical thinking skills?
Discover Talking Pen will also benefit kids who learn best through audiovisual means & has even proved very helpful & useful for kids with dyslexia & ADD. It's a great alternative to screen time & it's engaging.
Plus, your kids will love the sound of your voice emanating from the pen.  The little speaker at the top of the pen enables easy recording.
Another fun fact:
Talking Pen has 8,000 MB of memory & it can work with any book, as long as you use the DTP recording stickers.
