Father's Day is in two more Sundays (I have to say it that way because my toddler keeps asking me.) He is SO excited to do some nice things for his best friend; Daddy. I'd love to hear what some of your traditions & Father's Day celebrations are like. I'd also love to learn of any other fathers-oriented books you & your family enjoy!

Father's Day Round-Up:
1. Me & My Dad
by: Allison Ritchie & Alison Edgson
(
www.amazon.com/Me-My-Dad-Alison-Ritchie/dp/158925158X/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=me+%26+my+dad&qid=1623357276&sr=8-3
2. You Made me a Dad
by: Laurenne Sala & Mike Malborough
(Beautiful watercolor illustrations in this book will depict all the fears, joys, & responsibilities of being a dad over the years. I loved the sound of this title & think it will be a sweet gift to share with my husband this year. It brings back a lot of memories of when I was pregnant with our first-- a boy-- & how excited & nervous my husband really was.)
www.amazon.com/You-Made-Dad-Laurenne-Sala/dp/0062396943/ref=sr_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=me+and+dad&qid=1623356231&sr=8-5
3. The Night Before Father's Day
by: Natasha Wing
(Mom & the kids have some surprises planned for fathers day. When dad goes for a bike ride, everyone goes to work, cleaning dads car & organizing the garage, etc. Because he's so thankful, Dad takes everyone for a spin in the car the next day!)
www.amazon.com/Night-Before-Fathers-Day/dp/0448458713/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=the+night+before+father%27s+day&qid=1623648778&s=books&sr=1-1

4.  You Be Daddy
by: Karla Clark & Steph Lew
(In this clever role reversal, a daddy tells his son he's just too tired to be daddy for the night. So he asks his son to take over the role for him & it's pretty humorous what ensues.)
www.amazon.com/dp/1250225396/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?_encoding=UTF8&aaxitk=01227bc462e7dfbcbaf1aacc90adce4a&hsa_cr_id=9693253320301&pd_rd_plhdr=t&pd_rd_r=4ec20311-874f-41f4-906b-fff7083dd751&pd_rd_w=UBxFj&pd_rd_wg=cA6Pz&ref_=sbx_be_s_sparkle_td_asin_1_img

7. How to Babysit a Grandpa
by: Jean Reagan & Lee Wildish

10. My Dad
by: Anthony Browne

11. Grandpa's Promise

(Each spread of this precious picture book depicts how grandfathers contribute to a child's life. Whether it's grandpa the teacher, the protector, or the snuggler, grandpas have a special relationship with their grandchildren!)

12. My Papi Has a Motorcycle
by: Isabel Quintero &

Well, we are down to 1 week until we move. And yes, I am packing like mad, but I'm also taking breaks. So here are some books I'd like to share with you during one of those breaks-- they are helping my kids cope with moving a little better, & we make time to read several & discuss what moving to Utah will be like & what to expect. We discuss missing friends & why it's okay to be sad or miss them during this process. I think there are a lot of big emotions that play out during a move; I hope this list will help anyone else moving or dealing with a close friend or family member's move.

Kids Books About Moving:
1. Evelyn Del Rey is Moving Away
by: Meg Medina & Sonia Sanchez

(One of those timeless stories about best of friends, whose lives are so connected, they can't seem to remember a time when they weren't doing something together.  But then the news comes; Evelyn's family has to move away.
www.amazon.com/Evelyn-Del-Rey-Moving-Away-ebook/dp/B08DZDP23L/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2U7STMT8JCR0T&dchild=1&keywords=evelyn+del+rey+is+moving+away&qid=1621974265&sprefix=evelyn+del+rey%2Caps%2C206&sr=8-

2. In a Jar
by: Deborah Marcero & Ralph Lister
(Llewellyn is a little rabbit collector. One day he meets a friend when he's capturing a sunset from the lake; Evelyn & Llewellyn begin collecting all sorts of things together until they fill an entire room. But then, Evelyn has to move away with her family & it makes Llewellyn very sad; he feels empty inside. But then he decides to collect some things in a jar to send in a package to Evelyn; even better than sending a letter to a penpal!)

www.amazon.com/In-a-Jar/dp/B08JNDJ4V5/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=in+a+jar&qid=1621974562&s=books&sr=1-1

3. The Berenstain Bears: Moving Day
by: Stan & Jan Berenstain
(It's time for Mama & Papa Bear & Brother Bear to move to the tree house; their family is growing! That's where baby sister is later born.)

www.amazon.com/Berenstain-Bears-Moving-Day/dp/0394848381/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=berenstain+bears+moving+day&qid=1621991183&s=audible&sr=1-1

4. Life Without Nico
by: Andrea Maturna
(A little girl learns what it's like to be without her best friend, when he moves away. They write letters to each other, but it's not the same. Then she anxiously awaits Nico's return visit, but then gets nervous-- what if Nico has changed too much?)
www.amazon.com/Life-Without-Nico-Andrea-Maturana/dp/1771386118/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=life+without+nico&qid=1622219092&s=audible&sr=1-1

5. The Day You Begin
by: Jacqueline Woodson & Rafael Lopez
(While this book doesn't necessarily deal with a move, it does discuss how hard transitions can be to new schools & new neighborhoods for some kids; it's beautifully written & illustrated. It shares a message of hope & goodwill for kids who go to a new & unfamiliar environment.)
www.amazon.com/Day-You-Begin-Jacqueline-Woodson/dp/0399246533/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1622237674&sr=1-1

6. Goodbye Friend, Hello Friend
by: Cori Doerrfeld
(Probably my very favorite moving book, because it shows how when one good experience ends, a new one begins. Even though it is sad to lose friends & family to a move, we can make new friends & find new opportunities, & not just dwell on sadness.)
www.amazon.com/Goodbye-Friend-Hello-Cori-Doerrfeld/dp/0525554238/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1622048207&sr=8-1

8. Moving Away Will be Okay
by: Kellie Carte-Sears & Anahit Aleksanyan
(When she learns she is moving, Massy becomes consumed with emotions and filled with questions about the whole process. As adults read this with children, they will learn to provide a sense of security during challenges & provide emotional support; because moving with young children can be exciting, scary & confusing.)
www.amazon.com/Moving-Away-Will-Moments-Massy/dp/1792335415/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=moving+away+will+be+okay&qid=1622133045&sr=8-3

by: Zara Gonalez Hoang
(Moving from the jungle to the city is a big change for Ren. He meets a little girl named Ava who tries to show him the magic of the city life, but Ren can't see it; he misses the jungle. I love how it shows him pining away for his old home, because those are very normal emotions for children to feel. But eventually, Ren comes to see the adventures & colors in the city from the rooftops & he decides it's not so bad after all.)
www.amazon.com/Kind-Wild-Zara-Gonzalez-Hoang/dp/0525553894/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=a+new+kind+of+wild&qid=1622216104&s=books&sr=1-1

11. Sakura's Cherry Blossoms
by: Robert Paul & Misa Saburi
(Sakura is sad because her dad gets a job in America, & she has to leave her grandmother & beloved Japan behind. She makes a friend Luke, who tries to help her feel more comfortable in America, but then her grandmother gets sick & the family takes a trip back to Japan to visit her. Sakura is sad when she gets back to America once again & reflects on everything she's missing in her new home & life, but Luke surprises her & takes her to see the cherry blossoms flowering right in her own neighborhood.)

4. No More Pencils, No More Books,...Dirty Looks
by: Diane Degroat
(For those fans once it's the end of the school year, you'll enjoy this one! Gilbert is so excited for the last day of school. A class party & then on to summer vacation! But first he must sit through the class awards; will Mrs. Byrd even give him one?)

8. How I Spent my Summer Vacation
by: Mark Teague
(For sure, a more humorous suggestion on this list; the boy in this story tells his teachers at school a fabricated tale of what he was kept busy doing all summer; being kidnapped by cowboys & taught the ways of the West, instead of going out visit his Aunt Fern. Thankfully, he showed up to Aunt Fern's right as a stampede showed up to her barbecue! There's enough Western fantasy in this story to keep kids riveted!)

10. Come Next Season
by: Kim Norman & Daniel Miyares
(In this book, two children show their enthusiasm for each season, with a special love of cold treats & playing in the water in the summer.  The lyrical tone of the book helps the reader connect with the joys of celebrating with family all year-long. A fun side note is that the endpapers for this book are both from the summer section; playing basketball & swinging on a rope over the lake.)

12. Aqualicious
by: Victoria Kann
(Pinkalicious & her family are on vacation; but Pinkalicious & Peter want to start exploring while Mom & Dad are napping away at the beach. Pinkalicious learns about Merminnies (mini mermaids) & makes friends with one named Aqua.

(The famous Strega Nona hasn't been herself lately; she's been distracted. Then one night she dreams of her deceased grandmother & decides to go visit her little house on the seashore. She leaves Big Anthony & Bambolona in charge in her absence---- what could go wrong?)
www.amazon.com/Strega-Takes-Vacation-Tomie-dePaola/dp/0142500763/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=strega+nona+takes+a+vacation&qid=1621574278&sr=8-1

16. Davy's Summer Vacation
by: Brigitte Weninger & Eve Tharlet
(Davy & his bunny family all desperately need a vacation; but when they start packing to go on vacation to the ocean, they realize it's too expensive for them to pack so many things & go. Davy comes up with a solution instead! They can carry their belongings a short distance to the lake, & still have a nice time together.)

www.amazon.com/Davys-Summer-Vacation-Brigitte-Weninger/dp/0735842787/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=davy%27s+summer+vacation&qid=1621573995&sr=8-1

Until one year, when the blue cottage is kept waiting & lonely without any trace of the girl who so faithfully comes each year. The cottage sits empty year after year; will someone else come to discover & love it too?)

Mother's Day means different things for different people. Some people have surrogate mothers, leaders who were a motherhood role to them, or perhaps a sibling or aunt who has taken them in. Some women long to be mothers, & instead are wonderful aunties, babysitters, teachers, or some other figure a child desperately needs. (So nice that we celebrate teachers this week too!)  Whoever you celebrate as a mother figure, I hope a book on this list speaks out to you & helps you celebrate the important women in your life!

I love all the many ways kids suggest we can take better care of our planet.  Lately, in addition to planting veggies or trees, I've heard: reduce plastic use, conserve water, recycle daily, go on trash walks or pick-ups.
There is SO much good we can do! And not just on Earth Day (although it's a great reminder too!) I hope you enjoy this Earth Day book round-up; you'll probably add many more ideas to your list.

So it has recently come to my attention that April is Autism Acceptance (no longer "awareness") Month. I've been researching & collecting some books that will help kids with autism, their loved ones, & their classmates, teachers or other peers. Kids who are diagnosed with autism or on the autism spectrum, are often diagnosed as such because they struggle socially & emotionally and have difficulty processing emotions in the standard way.

Please enjoy this book round-up! I hope it can help everyone have love and acceptance for those who are neurodivergent & perhaps better understand them, and help highlight their strengths as well.

Books on Bravery & Courage

3/29/2021

I've been gathering this list on books for adults & kids about bravery & having courage for a while, but then I got to interview Terry Sidford for my podcast (episode 33) & the list kind of culminated from there. I have had so many new ideas spark since that productive, but painful conversation with Terry & I think it's important to identify our actions as courageous, where previously we may not have done so.
This list is a little unique since it will include books for adults too, but I think everyone can use a little more courage in their lives. I certainly want to be more courageous as I strive to teach my children what courage looks like in today's day & age.

BRAVERY & COURAGE BOOKS (KIDS):
1. Courage
by: Bernard Waber
(There are heroic people like firefighters who are courageous every day, but what about the every day normal behaviors like "going to bed at night with no nightlight." There are many varied kinds of courage, & it is good to take the opportunity to express courage often.)
www.amazon.com/Courage-Bernard-Waber/dp/0618238557/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=courage&qid=1617056295&sr=8-3

2. Jabari Jumps
by: Gaia Cornwall
(Jabari just finished swimming lessons & he's contemplating the high dive; but it's a lot more intimidating than he thought. Mid-climb up the ladder, he looks down to his dad, who agrees that maybe a small rest before going off the high dive would be good. Jabari confronts his fear of heights & doing new things, treats it like a surprise, & ....jumps!)

www.amazon.com/Jabari-Jumps-Gaia-Cornwall/dp/1536202908/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=jabari+jumps&qid=1617077964&sr=8-1

3. Be Brave Little One: An Inspiring Book About Courage
by: Marianne Richmond
(Written in comforting rhyme, this story talks about all of the things a little one can do to be brave.)
www.amazon.com/Brave-Little-One-Marianne-Richmond/dp/1492658812/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=be+brave+little+one&qid=1617078743&sr=8-1

4. My Magical Words
by: Becky Cummings
(Full of affirmations for children, this book also encourages kids to reflect on bravery & the fact that they are brave.)

5. It Will be Okay
by: Lysa Terkerust
(Growing up brings change...& that can be scary sometimes! In this book, little fox & little seed are facing change & new circumstances. But no matter how new or scary new circumstances are, God will be good & kind-- He will not desert children.)
www.amazon.com/Will-Okay-Trusting-Through-Change/dp/140032419X/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1617254679&sr=8-1

6. Tiny T. Rex & the Very Dark Dark
by: Jonathan Stutzman
(Tiny is having a sleepover campout with his best friend, but what will they do when the nombies come out at night? The dinos get creative as they try to create a massive nightlight & then it blows up, so they're in the dark again.)
www.amazon.com/Tiny-Rex-Very-Dark-Read-Aloud/dp/1452170347/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2C3O0KOP5AYWG&dchild=1&keywords=tiny+t.+rex+and+the+very+dark+dark&qid=1617295666&sprefix=tiny+t+rex+%26+the+dark%2Caps%2C232&sr=8-1

7. When You are Brave
by: Pat Zietlow Miller
(A young girl learns what it means to be brave, as she moves with her family & says goodbye to her old neighborhood. Easter is one of my absolute favorite holidays, & part of that is the new life that comes each spring, as well as the belief that I have a Savior & He died & was resurrected for all the world on Easter morn.  So my Easter book list will be divided in half; the first half will be the religious stories of Easter, & the second half will be the more commercial, Easter bunny type Easter books. I think both should be read & enjoyed, so I hope this list is useful to you as you read to your kiddos about the Easter season.

EASTER BOOKS LIST
(Christ-centered):
1. Savior
by: Maddie Daetwyler & Kindal Ridd

(This beautiful book presents a life story of Jesus Christ, our Savior, with more emphasis on his later years & what He accomplished while He was on the earth.  It is written in rhyme & the beautiful watercolor illustrations help the story feel relatable to children; you can't read that book & not get a sense of God's love, & our Savior's love for you.)
